Negligence

Abandoned and forgotten on crowded streets,
The empty bottles and crumpled receipts,
Thrown on the curb to feed the feet,
Of the thousands of so called “litter free” elites.

The wind whisks the papers and plastic bags away,
From fresh green fields to where dolphins play.
The grocery bags and news from yesterday lay
On the surface like vulnerable prey.

Seagulls and tortoises come for a meal,
Of plastic bits and package seals.
Weeks later on the shore we reveal,
The true contents the full bellies concealed.

Waste in our homes we abhor,
But waste on the streets we ignore.
